The importance of role models to inspire children to be their unique selves

​​It is common knowledge that much of the learning that occurs during a child’s development is done so through observation and imitation. Children look up to those they are cared for and surrounded by, as well as other role models they are exposed to and admire, which they then learn, absorb information and imitate behaviours from.

Educating children from before the age they can speak, is just as important as ensuring they are fed, bathed and clothed. It is important to give them every opportunity to learn and see what we do as adults and be exposed to the role models we value and who have also inspired us growing up.

It is extremely important for the development and growth of a child to be exposed to many role models who will offer a positive influence and the type of behaviour that inspires children to grow up and live meaningful lives. The best kind of role models show children how to live with integrity, optimism, hope, determination, and compassion.  

Children learn how to respond to situations based on the people they observe and are guided by, and at a young age it is important they are given the opportunity to learn from all types of genders, personalities and cultures. The actions and appearance of TV, movie, and music stars are always significant influences on children and their developing personalities, and it is important children feel inspired to be their unique and wonderful selves, but are also helped guided along the way.

With Mardi Gras and International Women’s Day being celebrated in March it is worth celebrating the incredible icons that continue to inspire the generations, artists like David Bowie, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, Frida Kahlo and Bjork. People from all different walks of life with different stories to tell, knowledge to offer and talents to share.

Inspiring role models who offer a colourful and diverse array of backgrounds and personalities, provide a great source of entertainment for any young child, and adult alike, and who wouldn’t want to emulate talented icons, like the ones above?
